Amazing Crockpot Apple Butter

Amazingly easy recipe that anyone can make!  Does it take a long time?  Yes.  Do you do anything during that time?  Pretty much nothing at all!

Apple butter is not just for the fall!  Enjoy some whenever the feeling hits you.  For us, it was this weekend.



Crockpot Apple Butter

Ingredients:

10 Apples (I used Fuji apples this time!)
1/2 Cup Brown Sugar
1/4 Cup White Sugar
1 Tablespoon Cinnamon
1/2 Teaspoon All Spice
3/4 Cup Water


Combine your dry ingredients in a bowl with a fork so that they are evenly mixed.

Peel and core the apples.  Dice or slice apples so that they are relatively even in size. 

Place in crockpot. 

Add your dry ingredients and toss together to coat apples with the sugar mixture.  Add water.  Cover with the crockpot lid and turn on low for 7-8 hours.  Stir every couple of hours to bring the moist apple slices to the top. Your apples should be soft and slightly reduced, but you'll still see quite a bit of liquid in there!

After 7-8 hours, increase the heat to high and allow to cook for an hour covered.  After an hour, use a wooden spoon and prop open the lid.  This will allow the apples to cook down while cooking off the liquids.  Cook on high for about 2 hours, stirring half way through.

Once the liquid is cooked off, your apple butter is done!  To test and make sure the liquid is cooked off, take a teaspoon of your apple butter and put it on a small plate for about 2 minutes.  If you have liquid separate from the apples, it needs to reduce down more. 

You can keep your apple butter slightly chunky, if you'd like.  Personally, I like to use an immersion blender to smooth it out so that it's smooth.  You could also (after it has cooled) put it in a blender or food processor to smooth it out.

Store your apple butter in a covered container or jar in the refrigerator.  You can also freeze this in a sealed container.

  4. Carol, I did once (for a friend that is diabetic). I substituted 1/4 Cup of Splenda brown sugar substitute (rather than 1/2 C brown sugar) and 6T of Splenda rather than white sugar. Splenda just cooks up so much more sweet, so not as much was needed.

    Also, when I used Splenda, I used 2T of cinnamon and 1T All Spice.

    It was delicious! :)
